Born and raised in the South Bay, Drew Van Orden developed a passion for baseball at a young age that has carried on throughout his life. Van Orden pitched for 4 years at Mira Costa High School, helping lead the team to the CIF semi-finals and garnering the Bay League Pitcher of the Year title during his 2010 senior season. He earned an athletic scholarship to Duke University during this time, where he would continue to pitch for the next 4 years. Van Orden enjoyed a prosperous college baseball career which included the honors of ACC- Honor Roll, Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, ACC pitcher of the Week, and ACC-All Tournament team. He also finished in the top 10 pitchers in the ACC in strikeouts, games started, and ERA. In 2014, Van Orden was selected in the 5th round of the MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals, making him the highest MLB draft pick to ever have attended Mira Costa High School. In 2015, Van Orden made the South Atlantic League All-Star team with a 4-1 record and a 1.76 ERA.
